A frame is more than an outline: it extends the artwork and links it to your interior. Three questions are all it takes to choose well: how wide, what colour, and with or without a mount.

Slim frame or wide frame?

The slim classic frame (a 15 mm flat moulding) steps back and lets the artwork speak. It suits watercolours, line art, fine-art photography and pared-back interiors, as well as gallery walls where several artworks hang side by side.

The wide wooden frame (a 45 mm solid-wood moulding) adds presence. It flatters oil paintings, impressionism and large formats, and brings warmth to an interior. The larger the size, the better a wide moulding keeps the proportions right.

Which colour?

  • Black (matt black lacquered limewood): graphic and timeless, it makes bright colours and contrasts stand out. Ideal for pop art, Art Deco, charcoal and ink, and contemporary or industrial interiors.
  • White (off-white lacquered limewood): light and airy, it extends a pale wall and gives softer artworks room to breathe: watercolour, minimalism, line art, pastel tones.
  • Oak (oiled solid oak): the warmth of pale wood, for Scandinavian, natural or bohemian interiors, and for landscapes.
  • Walnut (waxed solid walnut): a deep, dark wood, elegant with oil painting, warm tones and classic interiors.

Match the frame to the artwork, or to the room?

Both approaches work. Matching the frame to the artwork means picking up a colour from the picture: the black of the shadows, the brown of a woodland floor. Matching it to the room means echoing a material that is already there: the oak of a wooden floor, the black of a light fitting, the white of the walls. When in doubt, the frame should stay a notch quieter than the artwork.

With or without a mount?

The mount, that white border between the artwork and the frame, sets the image apart from the wall and gives it a gallery feel. It sits inside the frame: the picture keeps its size, and the artwork is printed slightly smaller. Find out more in our article on the picture mount.

What about no frame at all?

Already have a frame, or prefer to frame it yourself? The “Unframed” option delivers the fine-art print on its own. All our frames are presented in detail on our Frames page.

The simplest way is still to try: at the framing stage, you can switch frame, colour and mount in one click, and see the result on a wall or in the photo of your living room.
